Abstract

1,023,721. Spray-producers. SOC. ANON. DE MACHINES ELECTRO-STATIQUES. June 4, 1963 [June 4, 1962], No. 21493/62. Heading B2F. An electrostatic spraying apparatus comprises a passage 103 through which compressed air is fed into a chamber 4 by way of a plurality of tangential passages 6 and is discharged through the annular gap between the end 10 of a nozzle member 9 and the edge 5 of a nozzle head 2 as a vortex, a passage 17 through which paint &c. is forced under pressure to be discharged between the conical head 19 of a pin 18 and a conical recess 20 in the member 9 into the said vortex, and means for electrostatically charging the liquid at or before its point of discharge. A high D.C. voltage may be fed through a cable to a resistor 31 connected by a spring 32 to a block of high resistivity material directly in contact with the liquid being fed through a passage 42 in order to charge the liquid. Alternatively the pin 18 may be of a conducting or high resistance material and connected to the voltage source. The liquid is discharged as a conical film with the spray head according to Fig. 2 ; Figs. 6-8 (not shown) depict modified shapes for the ends of the pin 18 and the passage 17. Longitudinal adjustment of the pin 18 is effected by a trigger device, Fig. I (not shown) which is limited in movement by an adjustable screw. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown), the air and liquid outlets are both adjustable by screw devices.
