Abstract
Hydrocarbon-wet nitrocellulose granules are made by contacting a heated, agitated, aqueous slurry of fibrous nitrocellulose with 0.3-2.0 parts by weight, per part of nitrocellulose, of an organic liquid which is a solvent for the nitro-cellulose, removing substantially all of the solvent by distillation while continuing agitation, separating excess water from the resulting hardened nitrocellulose granules, then substantially displacing sorbed water from the water-wet nitrocellulose granules in presence of excess volatile hydrocarbon liquid, separating excess hydrocarbon, and recovering nitrocellulose granules wetted with 10-40% by weight of sorbed hydrocarbon, based on total weight. The organic liquid solvent may be a ketone or an ester, while the hydrocarbon may be aliphatic or aromatic. Many are specified. The aqueous nitrocellulose slurry may contain 5-20% by weight of nitrocellulose, and is preferably heated to a temperature at or near the boiling-point of the organic solvent or water-solvent azeotrope. The proportion of added solvent is sufficient to soften, but not to dissolve, the nitrocellulose, which is then converted to hardened, irregular, dense granules by distilling off the solvent at atmospheric or reduced pressure. After removal of excess water by e.g. drainage or centrifugation, sorbed water may be displaced by slurrying the water-wet granules in excess hydrocarbon and distilling at atmospheric pressure, or under reduced or increased pressure. The resulting free-flowing granules contain usually less than 1% by weight of water, and have a bulk density (dry basis) of 20-40 lbs. per cubic foot. In examples, toluene-wet nitrocellulose granules are prepared from fibrous nitro-cellulose containing 11.0-12.6% of nitrogen, after softening with methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isopropyl ketone, or isopropyl acetate.
