Abstract

A disinfectant composition comprises an organo-tin compound in which the tin is tetravalent and at least one reducing agent with bactericidal or fungicidal properties, said organo tin compound having the formula R1, R2, R3, R4, Sn where R1-4 represent organic radicals linked to the tin via carbon atoms or, represent, up to a maximum number of three in one molecule, organic or inorganic radicals not linked to the tin via carbon atoms. Specified reducing bactericides/fungicides are formaldehyde and hexamethylene tetramine sulphur dioxide, benzene sulphinic acids and nitrites. The radicals R1-4 may be alkyl, aryl or aralkyl with or without substituents. Typical tin compounds are dibutyl tin succinate, triethyl tin phenoxide and trisopropyl tin pentachlorophenate. The compositions may be in the form of solutions or dispersions containing non-ionic emulsifiers and may be used to treat paper, wood and textiles.
