Abstract

1,023,457. Exposure control in still or motion picture cameras. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Sept. 3, 1962 [Sept. 2, 1961], No. 33657/62. Heading G2A. To make allowance for film speed in the control of camera exposure by use of an exposure meter built into the camera and coupled through a friction coupling to an exposure regulating member, a holding means is engageable to over-ride the friction coupling and allow independent adjustment of the exposure regulating member to take account of film speed, the holding means being resiliently disengageable on movement of the exposure regulating member during such adjustment to an extent outside the range of film speeds provided for. As shown, movement of the exposure regulating member (shutter speed or diaphragm aperture setting member) drives via cable 1, drum 2 and gears 3, 4 shaft 5 on which index disc 6 is keyed and which drives through a friction clutch formed by spring washer 9 a gear 8 to which a film speed scale disc 7 is pinned. The gear 8 engages a gear 10 pinned to a plate 15 which bears a cam groove 19 embracing a pin 20 on the follow-up pointer 21 for the needle 22 of a photo-electric exposure meter 11 and also has a peripheral cam 23 which via a follower 24 closes contacts 25, 26 at low illumination levels to light a signal lamp or prepare for flash exposures. On depressing a button 13, the projection turned down from the end 12a of a member 12 engages the teeth of gear 10 and arrests it, so causing the spring washer to slip. Operation of the exposure regulating member then adjusts the system to take account of film speed as indicated by the index and scale discs 6, 7. When either of the limit of the film speed setting range available is reached, co-operating stops cause the discs 6, 7 to rotate together, whereupon due to the resilience of the outer end of the member 12 the projection at the end cams out of engagement with the teeth of gear 10 to avoid damage or incorrect setting of the device.
