Abstract

<PICT:1023427/C6-C7/1> Metal particles are formed by melting a metal bar 3 by an electron beam 2 and allowing the drops 7 of molten metal to fall on to a surface 5 which may be cooled by fluid 4. In modifications, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), the drops fall on to a rotating plate, and a rotating cylinder, respectively. Alternatively the bar may be rotated and the drops flung into a cylinder. The cooled surface may have grooves and may be vibrated.
