Abstract
1,022,911. High vacuum pumps. ONTARIO RESEARCH FOUNDATION. Jan. 24, 1963 [Jan. 25, 1962], No. 3089/63. Headings FIE and F1N. A vacuum pump comprises a housing 11 Fig. 1, having a fore vacuum compartment 13, a high vacuum compartment 12 and laterally spaced sets of first and second bars 16, 17, positioned between the compartments, the first bars 16 being positioned with surfaces thereof adjacent the high vacuum compartment, the second bars 17 being shielded from the high vacuum compartment by the first bars and being positioned closely adjacent the first bars which are maintained at a lower temperature than the second bars. A plurality of groups of layers of bars 14, 15 may be provided in which the size of gaps B and distance A decrease continuously from the high vacuum compartment end of the housing. In another embodiment first bars 16, 16a Fig. 7 (not shown) project inwardly from housing 11 which has water-cooling channels 29 and second bars 17, 17a project inwardly from support 21 which contains an electrical heater 28. In both embodiments molecules diffusing from the high vacuum compartments are deflected in a zig-zag path towards the fore vacuum compartment because they move away from a hot surface with greater velocity than from a cold surface.
