Abstract

An electroluminescent device of the type described in the parent Specification, or in Specifications 1,003,706 and 1,004,593, in which an image produced by excitation with cathode rays, high-energy nuclear particles, X-rays or laser beams is retained for a considerable period after the excitation has ceased has an arrangement whereby the unidirectional potential difference applied to the device is varied as a function of the reciprocal of the current flowing through the device. A series connected resistance which is varied in magnitude either manually or automatically is preferably used, e.g. a filament lamp or an electron discharge tube. The electroluminescent phosphor is as described in the parent Specification, i.e. ZnS, with or without CdS, MnS and MgCl2.6H2O, NaCl or BaCl2, with a slight addition of gold.
