Abstract
1,022,551. Driving arrangements. HARRY FERGUSON RESEARCH Ltd. Aug. 15, 1962 [Aug. 22, 1961], No. 30187/61. Heading B7H. In a sports motor vehicle of low construction, an engine 46 drives the front and rear wheels 44 and 45 through an hydraulic torque converter or change-speed gear 48, transfer box 49, propeller shafts 50 and 51 and differential gears 47 and 52. The transfer box (not shown) comprises a differential consisting of an input shaft 11, planets 13 mounted on a carrier 12, and sunwheels 14 and 15, the sleeve 17 of the sun-wheel 14, which constitutes one output shaft of the differential, being splined to the shaft 11 and drivingly carrying a sprocket wheel 32, the sleeve of the sun-wheel 15, constituting the other output shaft of the differential, being connected by a shaft 16 to a forked member 31 to which the rear wheel propeller shaft is connected by a universal joint, and the sprocket 42 being connected by chains to a sprocket drivingly connected to a shaft from which the front wheel propeller shaft 30 is driven through a universal joint, means 19 being provided limiting the difference in speeds between the front and rear propeller shafts and having a rotatable housing geared through pairs of gear-wheels 20, 21 and 22, 23 to the rear output shaft 16 and through gear-wheels 24, 25 to a sleeve 12A extending rearwardly from the planet carrier 12. The shafts 11 and 16 are coaxial and the axes of the shaft 11 and the shaft of sprocket driving shaft 30 lie in a plane which makes an acute angle with that containing the axis of the shaft 11 and the rotary axis of the device 19. The casing 10 is extended to include the sprockets 33 and 34 and in the extension is mounted an hydraulically operating chain tensioning device.
