Abstract

<PICT:1022073/C4-C5/1> Hydrocarbons are pyrolysed to acetylene and ethylene in a furnace having at one end a burner (see Division F4) comprising a movable plate 7 containing perforations with nozzles, having adjustable valves, terminating in such perforations (fuel and oxidant being introduced through the nozzles and perforations), a constricted portion 16 close to the point of injection 14 of hydrocarbons and a reaction zone 17. Hydrocarbons may be introduced tangentially or radially or at some intermediate angle and at an angle of 0-\sB45 degrees to a plane at right-angles to the longitudinal axis through slits or a series of parallel small holes.
