Abstract

1,021,741. Cigarette-making machines. MOLINS ORGANISATION Ltd., and M. A. PYM. May 19, 1964 [May 20, 1963], No. 20054/63. Heading A2C. A continuous rod making machine in which when the machine is operating correctly a continuous rod issuing from rod forming mechanism travels lengthwise in a substantially linear path across a gap to a rod receiving member has a rod cutting device comprising diverting means and a disc knife carried by the frame of the machine and rotatable about an axis substantially normal to the linear path of movement of the rod. The cigarette or filter rod is passed beneath a heater 1 to seal the paper wrapper and is carried on an endless tape 2 beneath a hooked portion 12 of a guide member 5 pivoted at 6 to a fixed bracket 7 and urged by a spring 8 to a position which allows the rod to travel to a member 4 which forms the entry to a cut off mechanism. At the commencement of operation with the rod unsatisfactorily formed, the guide member 5 is moved downwardly by a handle 17. The heater is then lowered and when the rod is satisfactory the operator releases the guide member 5 and the spring 8 pulls the guide member and rod upwardly against stop 11. The rod is severed by the rotating disc knife 13. The rod then travels forwardly to the cut off mechanism. The guide member may be moved automatically by providing an over centre device the position of which is controlled by the stiffness of the rod, or by making it dependent on some part of the machine e.g. the lowering of the heater.
