Abstract

The permeability of a porous body is reduced by heating the body in the vapour of an organosilicon compound at a temperature of 700-1100 DEG C., so that SiC is deposited in the pores. The organosilicon compound preferably has a boiling-point between 30 DEG and 300 DEG C. and may be a simple or substituted organosilane having a Si : C ratio of 1 : 1, e.g. CH3SiH3, CH3SiCl3 or CH3SiCl2H, or other than 1 : 1, e.g. PhSiCl3, in which case a Si- or C-containing compound, e.g. SiCl4, CCl4, CH4, may be added in amount to give a 1 : 1 ratio. The body may be of SiC (prefired at 2000 DEG C. or treated with HF to remove SiO2), graphite, alumina, nitrides, e.g. SiN, silicides, borides or other carbides; which, if unfired, are pressed into shape with a binder. The organosilicon vapour may be carried by an inert gas into the reaction chamber, maintained at or above atmospheric pressure or at low organosilicon partial pressure, containing the body, which may have a vacuum applied to its faces; or the body may be held in refluxing vapours while maintaining a bleed of inert gas, e.g. A or H2. The body may be heated by means of electrical or radio frequency and the temperature held for 2-150 hrs., or a continuously increasing temperature is employed (resulting in a deposit of SiC on the surface as well as pores).
