Abstract

1,021,427. Wells. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. Aug. 27, 1962 [Sept. 11, 1961], No. 32866/62. Heading E1F. Oil is displaced from oil bearing rock by flooding the rock with a solution comprising water and a mixture of X-alkyl benzene sulphonates where X is a cation which forms a compound with the alkyl benzene sulphonate having a solubility of at least 5000 p.p.m. by weight in water and where the average molecular weight of the alkyl benzene moieties in the mixture is between 120 and 218. The solution destroys the surface forces holding residual oil in the rock, the oil emulsifying with and disposing in the solution so that the solution containing oil may be revovered and treated to obtain oil. The mixture is dissolved in the water to form a concentration from 0À5 per cent to 30À0 per cent by weight. The cation may be sodium, lithium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, barium, copper, ammonium and amines.
