Abstract

1,021,410. Shaft seals. STAL-LAVAL TURBIN A.B. Jan. 21, 1965 [March 31, 1964], No. 2708/65. Addition to 954,788. Heading F2B. The method of sealing a turbine or compressor shaft claimed in the parent Specification is modified in that air is supplied to the chamber III by a fan 17 in the line 10 at a pressure which is kept constant by a pressurecontrolled valve 19 in a line 18 between the discharge and suction sides of the fan and the pressure on the suction side of the fan is also kept constant by a regulating valve 22 in the line 20. The valves 19 and 22 are controlled by the discharge pressure in line 10 and the pressure in the leakage condenser 12 respectively. Vapour saturated air from the condenser passes through a predryer 14 before being drawn by the fan 17 through a rotary dryer 16 where it is dried by by-pass air heated in a heater 23. If leakage through the gland 5 increases the valve 19 is throttled thus decreasing the pressure in condenser 12 thereby opening valve 22 to increase the air intake through line 20 and compensate for the increased air withdrawn by the fan 8. If leakage through the gland 6 increases the valve 19 is throttled but the pressure in the condenser 12 is unchanged due to the increased air flow from chamber IV through the line 11 and the setting of valve 22 is thus unaltered.
