Abstract

Polymers of the formula <FORM:1021005/C3/1> in which the 4 central carbon atoms form part of an aromatic grouping, Z is H or a hydrocarbon group, Ar1 is aromatic and n is greater than 1 may be produced by interaction of <FORM:1021005/C3/2> and Z-CO-CO-Ar1-CO-CO-Z Reactants of type I specified are: 1,2,4,5-tetraaminobenzene, 3,31,4,41 - tetraaminodiphenyl, 3,31,4,41 - tetraaminodiphenylether, 3,31,4,41-tetraaminodiphenylsulphide, 3,31,4,41 - tetraaminodiphenylmethane and 2,3,6,7 - tetraaminonaphthalene. Compounds of type II specified are 1,3- and 1,4-diglyoxylbenzenes, 4,41 - diglyoxyldiphenyl, 4,41 - diglyoxyldiphenylether, and 4,41 - diglyoxyldiphenyl sulphide. Z may be alkyl or aryl, e.g. methyl. The reactants may be molten or in an inert solvent at between 50 DEG and 300 DEG C. Solvents specified are dimethyl formamide, dimethyl aniline, ethanol/dioxane mixtures, N-methyl pyrrolidone hexamethyl phosphor-triamide and metacresol. The reactants may be in equimolar proportions or one may be in large excess. An inert atmosphere may be used. The polymer may be filtered off and heated to 300-450 DEG C. in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen or argon or under reduced pressure, e.g. 1 mm. Hg. The product can be moulded and may be made into rocket nose-cone fairings.
