Abstract

A process for the production of an electrically conductive resinous material comprises reacting at least one diamine of the formula H2N-R1-NH2 where R1 is a divalent radical containing at least 2 carbon atoms, the two amino groups of said diamine each being attached to separate carbon atoms of said divalent radical, with at least one tetra carboxylic acid dianhydride of the formula <FORM:0972007/C3/1> where R is a tetravalent radical containing at least 2 carbon atoms, no more than two carbonyl groups of said dianhydride being attached to any one carbon atom of said tetravalent radical, at a temperature of up to 175 DEG C., in a solvent for at least one of the reactants, said solvent also being inert to the reactants under the reaction conditions employed, so as to form a polyamide-acid having an inherent viscosity of at least 0.1, mixing conductive carbon black particles with the polyamide-acid to form a shapeable polymeric composition having the carbon black particles uniformly distributed therein, said particles constituting from 10 to 90% by weight of the composition, and, in either order, shaping the composition into a shaped article, and treating the polyamide-acid composition to effect ring closure of the polyamide-acid therein and thus convert it to polyamide.
