Abstract

Lighting apparatus comprises an ellipsoidal or hyperboloidal reflector and a straight light radiating element mounted along or transverse to the major axis of the reflector, the mounting means providing a number of optionally selectable locations for the element relative to the focus of the reflector to produce different illumination patterns. In a first embodiment, Fig. 1, a quartz-iodine lamp 10 mounted axially within a semi-ellipsoidal reflector 17 is supported in a socket structure 19 by means of ceramic blocks 25, 26 containing contacts 42, 43 and held in spaced relationship by tubes 27, 28. The block 25 is slidable longitudinally on tracks 38, 39 (Fig. 2, not shown), formed in a bracket 31, and its movement is controlled by a screw 86 rotatably attached by means of a head 87 to a plate 88 fixed to the block. The screw passes through a fixed nut 94 which is formed as a rod bent into a coil and secured by a screw 95 to the bracket 31. The range of movement of the block is defined by nuts 84, 85 adjustable along rods 77, 78 and the current leads 58, 59 are sufficiently flexible to allow for the axial adjustment of the lamp. The reflector 17 is specular over the area extending from the vertex to the point 100, the remaining portion being formed, as by a controlled etching process, with elemental areas which deviate a few degrees from a true ellipsoidal contour to produce a slight diffusion so that no hot-spots are produced on the illuminated field by the coiled coil filament. Fig. 7 (not shown) illustrates an arrangement in which the quartz-iodine lamp 104 is mounted transversely to the axis of an ellipsoidal reflector 101 between either of two pairs of contact buttons 124, 126 and 125, 127 carried by resilient arms 106, 107. In Fig. 20 (not shown) the lamp 155 is moved axially relative to a hyperbolic reflector 150 by means of a handle 187 which has a shaft 188 journalled in a fixed part 165 of the lamp housing and connected to the slidable block 178 by a crank 194 and link 195.
