Abstract

A laser glass containing divalent or trivalent rare earth metal ions of praeseodymium, neodymium, holmium, or ytterbium as an activator consists essentially of 5 to 40% SiO2, 10-35% B2O3, 30 to 50% BaO, 0 to 30% La2O3, 0 to 10% ThO2, 0.1 to 9% of one of the group Ho2O3, Nd2O3, Pr2O3, and Yb2O3, 0 to 8% ZrO2, 0 to 6% Al2O3, 0 to 0.8% As2O3 and 0 to 0.5% Sb2O3 by weight respectively. Up to 15% of the BaO may be replaced by one or more of the oxides of cadmium, strontium, magnesium, calcium, and zinc. The glass is melted at 1400 DEG to 1450 DEG C. and stabilized at 1200 DEG C.
