Abstract

1,020,755. Electrophotographic materials. AMERICAN PHOTOCOPY EQUIPMENT CO. Aug. 14, 1962, No. 31098/62. Heading H1K. An electrophotographic material having photoconductive zinc oxide dispersed in an insulating binder is sensitized with a dye mixture which is grey or black in colour, so that the resultant material is substantially white in appearance. In the embodiments suitable combinations of known sensitizing dyes are used to provide the grey or black dye mixture. The binder is a natural or synthetic resin or wax which does not interefere with the spectral response of the material. Suitable binders include vinyl resins, silicone resins, phenolformaldehyde compounds, cellulose ethers, cellulose esters, paraffin wax, carnauba wax, and beeswax. Mixtures of binders may be used and plasticizers or similar modifying agents may be added. In the six specific examples the binder used is a silicone resin, and dye mixtures containing three or more components are used. The spectral response curves (two of which are similar) of the materials of the specific examples are illustrated in Figs. 1-5 (not shown). The photoconductive material in these examples is applied to a paper support, but possible supports include other relatively insulating materials, and also relatively conductive materials such as metal foils and paper impregnated with carbon black.
