Abstract

The dark resistivity of zinc oxide particles is increased by contacting the particles with at least one ionic organic phosphorous compound so that absorption of the compound(s) takes place at the surface of the zinc oxide particles. It is thought that absorption takes place through interchange of zinc ions from the oxide with the cationic atom or group of the phosphorus compounds. A list of suitable acidic oxygen-containing phosphorus compounds is given in the Specification. Salts of these compounds may also be used, the cation being a metal ion, an ammonium ion, or a quaternary ammonium ion. Various classes of organic compounds are suggested for use in combination with the phosphorus compound to treat the oxide. These classes include certain aliphatic mono- and poly-carboxylic acids, their salts, and anhydrides; aliphatic mono- and polysulphonic acids and their salts; aliphatic boric acid compounds and their salts; aromatic mono- and poly-carboxylic acids and their salts and anhydrides; and aromatic sulphonic acid compounds and their salts. The phosphorus compound(s) with or without additional compounds from the classes above will be termed a "treating agent." The zinc oxide particles may be contacted with the treating agent in the following ways: the zinc oxide may be exposed to a gaseous form of the treating agent; the treating agent may be added to an aqueous or organic dispersion of the oxide; or the zinc oxide may be dispersed in a binder solution and used to form a photo-conductive layer on a backing which comprises a layer containing a sufficient concentration of treating agent to ensure that the treating agent diffuses into the zinc oxide layer during the coating operation or during storage prior to use-alternatively the treating agent may be allowed to diffuse from a layer applied over a resin-bound layer of zinc oxide.
