A method of laying long sections of welded rail 1 comprises laying the rails 1 outside an existing standard gauge track 2 to form a broad gauge track, lifting the existing track 2 and displacing it inwardly to form a narrow gauge track 6, lifting the long sections 1 and moving them on to the supports for the existing rails 2 to produce a standard gauge track 9. The existing rails 2 are finally removed. Apparatus for laying track in this method includes a first device A travelling on the rails 1 and lifting the rails 2, a second device B travelling on the rails 1 and moving the rails 2 to a narrow gauge, a third device C travelling on the rails 2 and moving the rails 1 to the standard gauge and a fourth device travelling on the rails 1 and checking and setting the desired gauge. The devices A, B, C are similar and have wheels 22 movable, on a main frame 20, to engage two of the three track gauges. The device A has a hydraulic jack 30 operating a platform 36 to engage the ground to raise the frame 20 for the necessary gauge adjustment of the wheels 22. Levers, hinged to the frame at 43, are also operated by the jack and carry a tubular beam 45 from which depend lifting arms 54 to raise the rails 2 and allow conical support rollers 62 to be positioned under the rails. The rollers 62 are carried by arms 60, pivotable about a vertical axis and attached to a slide 26a, laterally adjustable by a screw jack, the slide also carrying guide rollers 64, 65. The device B has only the guide rollers 64, 65 and travels on the rails 1 on broad gauge, while the device C is similar to device A and travels on the narrow gauge 6. The device D is a simple truck having correcting rollers 99 on vertical axes.
