Abstract

Lubricating oil fractions are refined, and vaporizable solvents used therefor are vaporzed, condensed, and recovered in a process which comprises the steps of solvent deasphalting to obtain separately a deasphalted oil/ solvent phase and an asphalt/solvent phase; a selective aromatic solvent extraction step, for example with phenol, which produces an extract phase and a raffinate phase, which are separtely heated to a temperature at which the hot extraction solvent vapours are removed; and a solvent dewaxing step in which a dewaxed oil/solvent phase and a slackwax/solvent phase are separated; the deasphalting and dewaxing solvents, which may both be propane, being removed by heating the separated phases and flashing the solvent therefrom, and the hot extraction solvent vapours being condensed by indirect heat transfer with the relatively cool deasphalted oil/solvent phase, the dewaxed oil/solvent phase and the slack wax/solvent phase, thereby simultaneously heating and evaporating the solvent from these phases, this solvent being condensed and collected.
