Abstract

1,019,954. Railway vehicle undercarriages. PULLMAN Inc. July 24, 1963, No. 29279/63. Heading B7L. [Also in Division F2] An improvement in the invention described and claimed in the parent Specification comprises the provision of an hydraulic cushion device 18a, Fig. 1, having a housing 660 fixed between stops 662 secured to the railway vehicle underframe 21 and an operating rod 666 the two ends 672 of which engage abutment members 650 rigidly fixed to the framing members 42 of the load carrier 14 longitudinally slidable on the underframe. Moreover the cushion travel characteristics are either automatically controlled by the load sensing means 95 or by manual adjustment means. Referring to Fig. 3, the cushion housing 660 has secured therein a cylinder 670 having a row of orifices 680 and in which is slidable a piston head 668 secured to the rod 666. Rotatable on the cylinder is a sleeve 690 provided with a row of orifices 692 to cooperate with the orifices 680, the sleeve being surrounded by an annular chamber 693. As the piston head moves under coupler impacts, hydraulic liquid is moved from one end of the cylinder through orifices 680 under the control of the orifices 692 into the chamber 693 and thence to the other end of the cylinder through orifices 692 and 680. The device is recentred by springs 678, Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 3, the sleeve 690 has a bevel gear ring 694 at one end engaged with a bevel gear 696 on a shaft 700. The latter is operated by a pinion 702 from the load sensing means 95 as described in previously mentioned Specification. Alternatively, the shaft may be operated manually as described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown). The sleeve may be provided with a worm-gear instead of the bevel gear and engaged by a worm as described with reference to Fig. 5 (not shown). In another embodiment described with reference to Fig. 6 (not shown) the rotatable sleeve is operable manually by the use of a screw driver engaging a slot in the end of the sleeve operating shaft. The sleeve in this case is provided with several rows of orifices selectively engageable with the single row of orifices in the cylinder. The end of the sleeve opposed to the bevel gear is notched at the ends of the rows for engagement with a spring-urged ball in the housing, the notches and associated indicia appearing, when selected, in a window provided in the housing. The latter is also provided with a flexible wall portion to avoid undue pressure build-ups in the housing. In a further modification the cushion housing may be fixed to the load carrier 14 and the abutment stops 650 fixed to the vehicle underframe.
