Abstract

In an arrangement for testing the interrupting capacity of high voltage power circuit breakers under distant short circuit conditions, a source G supplies high current to the breaker S under test, while a shunt circuit comprising a capacitor C2 is connected in parallel with the source. An oscillatory circuit L1C1 is arranged in the shunt circuit in series with the capacitor C2 and is so designed that it simulates the transmission line at whose distant end the short circuit exists. This arrangement is differentiated from the prior art in that the breaker test current does not pass through the inductance L1, so that a physically smaller inductance may be used, and external flashovers across L1 do not damage the installation, since the capacitor C2 blocks low frequency current. The oscillatory circuit L1C1 may be in the form of a series of inductor-capacitor sections (Fig. 1d not shown), and such an arrangement may be combined with synthetic circuit breaker testing arrangements known in the art (Fig. 1e not shown).
