Abstract

101,969. Vaught, J. C. H. Oct. 23, 1915. [Convention date]. Percussive drills.- A pneumatic - hammer drill is provided with an air-operated feed and withdrawal mechanism, the fluid being supplied to the feed cylinder independently of the hammer and from the same common source, and passing through passages carried on the exterior wall of the cylinder. The drill 1 is secured to the feed-cylinder 6 by a pin 9, and the feedpiston rod 14 is secured to a head 20 which is rigidly fixed to the cradle 16. The feed-cylinder ports 23, 24a may be formed by brazing or welding a tube or trough to the cylinder, and lead to a valve-chest 24 similarly secured to the cylinder and constantly receiving fluid under pressure through a conduit 46 from the main valve-chest 2. A spring-pressed valve 29 is arranged in the valvechest 24 and is adapted to close all the ports, or to open either of the ports 23, 24<a> to the inlet 25, while the other of the two ports is open to an exhaust port 33a or 28. When the drill is not operating, the cylinder 6 is locked to the cradle by a screw.
