ROCK-DRILL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
` Patented .May 18, 1920.
Appueation mea rune so, 1917. serai 110. 177,913.
To allzu/1,0m 'it may concern Be it known that l, vVrLLmM A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bock Drills, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to rock drilling apparatus, and the primaryobj ect is to provide novel, simple, and effective means for effecting the rotation of the drill bit, while being operated on by the drilling motor.
One embodiment of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is view in elevation of the apparatus,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view-on an enlarged scale through the main portion of the same,
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a detail. sectional `view substantially on the line 1t-4 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Similar` reference numerals designate corresponding parts in the figures of the drawings.
In the embodiment illustrated, a drilling motor, designated generally by the reference numeral 6, is employed, projecting forwardly from a head block 7, which head block carries rearwardly extending eXtensible feeding means 8. Considering first the head block 3, it will be seen that it comprises a body portion formed of sections 9 and 10 having an interfitting joint 11. The eXtensible feeding `means consists of the usual cylinder member 12 having a piston 13 therein, the cylinder member in this instance being coupled to the head block by being abutted lthereagainst and surrounded by a collar 111 through. which pass tie bolts 15 that are engaged with the front section 10 of thc head block, as shown at 16, in Fig. 1. These tie bolts thus serve to clamp the cylinder member to the rear section 9 of the head block, and also clamp the two sections `9 `and 10 together.` Formed in the head block and extending through the section 10 and into the section 9, is a forwardly extending socket 17. It will be noted that the rear end of the cylinder member 6 has a rearwardly extenddesired type, though preferably of the valveless character. 1t consists of a cylinder member 18 having a piston chamber 19, in
which operates the head 20 of a hammer piston. rihis hammer piston is provided with a rearwardly extending neck 21 having a reduced portion 22 disposed adjacent to the head 20. rEhe neck portion operates in a reduced chamber 23 communicating with the chamber 19 and extending rearwardly therefrom. lVhen the motor is in operation, motive Huid, preferably air, is constantly supplied into the rear portion of the chamber 23 as is hereinafter explained, and the supply of this motive fluid passes through channels 241 and 25 alternately to opposite sides of the head 20, this supply being controlled by the neck 21 with its reduced portion 22 in a manner well understood to those skilled in the art. The exhaust from the motor takes place through the passageway 26.
The hammer piston 20 in this instance instead of operating directly upon the drill head block, and on this gudgeon portion and l really forming a part thereof, is detachably fitted a sleeve 32 having an integral worm wheel 31 that is rotatable in a chamber p0rtion 35 formed in the head block. It will be seen that this wheel is in the nature of a flange that is located between the two sections 9 and 10 of the head block, so that its movement in either direction longitudinally of the .machine is prevented, and a washer 36 ispreferably located against the rear side of this worm wheel, the joint being furthermore provided with a packing gasket 37. The detachable sleeve has its rear portion keyed, as shown at 38, to the extension 31 of the cylinder member, and is held to said extension by washers 39 abutted thereagainst and held in place by a screw plug 40 threaded into the rear end of said extension 37. The parts are thus all effectively held together.
Motive fluid supplied from any suitable source is conducted by suitable means to a nipple 4l formed upon the head bloei; and communicating with a valve casing, in which is located the usual rotatable throttle valve 42. The bore 43 of this valve is in constant communication with the motive fluid supply, and is provided with lateral ports 44, 45 and 46. The port 44 is movable into and out of communication with a passageway 47 that communicates through a series of ports 48 with the neel; chamber 28, and the ports 45 and 46 are movable into and out of coinmunication with a passageway 49 that conducts motive fluid to the extensible feeding means 8. lt will be evident that when vall the ports 44, 45 and 46 are out of comnninication with the passageways 47 and inotive fluid is out off from the machine. lf the port 45 is brought into communication vith the passageway 49, motive fluid flows to the feeding means in suihcient quantity to cause the extension thereof, and thus raise the drill actuating motor to its work. lf the valve is turned until the ports 44 and 46 are brought respectively into communication with the passageways 47 and 49,1notive fluid is supplied beth to the feedinel means and to the drill actuating motor, so that the latter is operated, and as the drill hole is deepened, the motor is kept up to the work.
F or the purpose of rotating the drilling motor with respect .to the feeding inea-ns and head block and thus rotsnhg the drill bit, the following mechanism is preferably er-- ployed. A rotary motor is located vupon one 'de of the head block, and consists of a casing 50 having a detachable head 51 and containing a pair of intermeshing geared pistons 52 yand 53. The piston 52 is an idler, being provided with a roller bearing 53ct `operating .on a shaft 54 that extends across `the casing and has a bore 55 therethrough. The yother piston 53 is keyed to a shaft 56 that projects into 5the :head block, and has a worm 57 in mesh with the worm wheel 34, which as already described, is keyed to the .drilling motor. The shaft 56 is provided with suitable `bearings 5S and 59. The head 51 of `therotary motor .casing 50 has an .eX- tension constituting a handle grip 60 provided with achamber 61 in communication with the bore 55 `of the shaft 54, and leading tosaid bore 55 is a passageway 62 .that is in communication with the motive fluid supply, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. Leading rfrom the chamber 61is a passageway/.63 that opens into the rotary motor at oneside of the intermeshing .portions of the 1,.; idees pistons. An exhaust passageway 64 leads from the opposite side to the outer atmosphere. The chamber 61 at its point of communication with the bore 55 of the shaft 54, has a valve seat 65, and movable into and out of cooperation with the valve seat, is a 1 n plug valve 66 carried by a screw handle 6r that is threaded on a stem 68. This stem is screwed into the outer end of the chamber and constitutes a closure therefor. lt will be eifident that by .rotating the handle 67 upon the stem 68, the valve may be seated or unseated, as desired.
The operation may be briefly outlined as follows: 1When motive fluid is introduced nto the drill actuating motor and to the feeding means as above explained, the said motor will be held to its work, and will be in operation. T he rotation of the drill bit is effected by the bodily rotation of the drilling motor, and the rotation of said drilling motor, it will be observed, is independent of the rotation of the feeding means. That is to say, the feeding means and head block are held against rotation by the handle, coinprising the parts 60 and 67. To effect the rotation of the drilling motor, it is only necessary for the operator grasping the handle 60-67, to turn the part 67 in the proper direction and unseat the valve 6.6, whereupon the motive fluid will pass through the passageway 62, bore 55, chamber 6l and passageway 63 into the rotary motor, effecting the rotation of the pistons thereof. The rotation of this piston will, of course turn the shaft 56, the worm 57 and the worm wheel 34. lnasmuch asthis worm wheel is keyed, as shown at 88 to the drilling motor, the latter will be rotated, and consequently the drill bit will be turned with it.
Means are also provided for supplying a cleansing fluid to the drill bit. lt will be noted by Reference to 2 that said drill bit 30 has as usual a bore 70 longitudinally therethrough for the purpose of conducting cleansing fluid to the bottom of the ydri-ll hole to .eject the cuttings. The rear section 9 of the head Ibloclr is provided with a socket 71 inwhich is fitted the rear `end of a tube 72 vthat passes through the plug 40, through the piston 20--21, through the tappet 27, and into the bore 70. This rear end is held in place by a plug 73. A. nipple 74, located atone side `of the head block, provides means for coupling a water supply hose and from this nipple a passageway leads to and is in communication with the rear end of the tube 72. Tater or other cleansing fluid can thus be passed through the motor Yto .the drill bit. lt will be noted that this tube 72 `is held. against rotation, and that the drilling Inotor is rotatable about the same as an axis.
From .the foregoing, ,it is .thought thaJ the construction, operation and many adif'antages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, sh ape, proportion, and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
