Abstract

A solid detergent cake or bar comprises a homogeneous mixture of sodium stearoyl and/or lauroyl isethionate and an alkyl benzene sulphonate detergent, whose alkyl radical contains at least 10 carbon atoms, together with a germicidally effective quantity of a composition consisting of 10-20% elementa iodine and 90-80% non-ionic surface active agent. The alkyl of the benzene sulphonate is decyl, dodecyl or keryl. The non-ionic surfactant is a polyethylene glycol, the mono-stearate or tertiary dodecylthioether thereof, iso-octyl or nonyl phenoxy polyethenoxy ethanol or a polyoxyethylene ester derivative of mixed resin and fatty acids. The bar has a pH of 4-7, contains 1-7.5% iodine on a dry weight basis and is made by adding 15-20% by wt. of water to the isethionate and sulphonate mixture, heating to 80-100 DEG C., adding the iodine composition, heating the mixture to reduce the water content to not more than 5% by wt. and shaping the resultant fused mixture. Sodium lauryl sulphate, corn starch, tetrasodium pyrophosphate, mono potassium orthophosphate, aluminium sulphate, kaolin, and waxes are present in exemplified compositions.
