[Also in Division B7] A window operating device applicable to vehicle windows comprises a backplate 1 with a metal portion 3 and a cylindrical casing 4 having opposite journal openings in them, a spindle 5 adapted at one end to receive a window operating handle 27, this end being rotatably supported in the opening 6 in casing 4. A shaft pin 9 adapted at one end to be a press fit in a bore 8 in the spindle and at the other end 10 to be journalled in the other opening 2 has freely mounted on it a geared pinion 12 which meshes with a toothed sector 21 forming part of the window lift linkage. A metal cap 13 fixed to the pinion has a projecting key 14 which enters a cut-away segment 15 of the spindle 5. A helical spring 16 which surrounds the spindle has turned ends 17 and 18 which are close to the radial end surfaces 19 and 20 of the cut-out 15. Torque applied to the spindle presses a surface 19 or 20 on to a spring end 17 or 18 thus contracting the spring and freeing it from contact with the casing 4. The surface 19 or 20 then presses one or other of the ends of the key 14, the torque thus being transmitted to the pinion 12. If torque is applied to the pinion in an attempt to force down the window the key 14 contacts a spring end 17 or 18 and unwinds the spring slightly thus pressing it against the casing 4 which acts as a brake drum. The drive is then locked solid. Lubrication channels 22 and 23 are provided in the spindle.
