Abstract

1,019,057. Opening containers. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. June 5, 1964 [Dec. 17, 1963], No. 23478/64. Heading B8D. A can 23, Fig. 5 (not shown), has an end 28a in which the removal of the annular tear strip 33 defined by score lines 34, 35 removes the major portion 31 of the can end, leaving a raw edge 35 which, as it is disposed outwardly y of an adjacent part of outwardly flared portion 26 of the can body, is shielded from possible cutting of fingers gripping the can within the open end and from damaging contact with contents dispensed from the can. In the embodiment shown, the end panel also includes below the chuck wall 30 a generally upwardly projecting bead 50 which has one edge disposed along the score line 35. Raw edge 35 is thus further shielded from causing damage to or impeding dispensation of the contents. In other embodiments the protecting bead is in the can wall, or is omitted, and the can wall may be wholly tapered below body portion 27.
