Abstract
Native and regenerated cellulosic fibres, spun yarns and woven fabrics, e.g. cotton and viscose rayon, are creaseproofed and shrinkproofed by treating them with substances capable of reacting with themselves and with the cellulose in response to a reduction of the pH value below 7 causing the acid required for the cross-linking reaction or its anhydride to act in gaseous form in admixture with air or an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen or carbon dioxide, for 3-60 seconds on the airdry or slightly moistened fibres, yarns or fabrics having a moisture content of 2-15% based on dry weight, and then storing them outside the acid gas-filled treating chamber for 20 minutes to 18 hours until the cross-linking reaction has been terminated. The cross-linking substance may be dimethylol urea, dimethylol ethylene urea, dimethylol hydroxyethylene urea, dimethylol propylene urea, dimethylol butylene urea or a derivative of melamine or other triazine, a triazone, acetylene urea, epoxide, diepoxide or acetal. Suitable acids are hydrochloric acid, sulphur trioxide, hydrogen fluoride and formic acid. The material treated may be treated with an aqueous solution of the cross-linking agent which may also contain softening agents, stiffening agents, brightening agents, dyestuffs, wetting agents or hydrophobing agents, excess solution removed by squeezing, centrifuging or suction, dried to a moisture content of 2-15% by weight or dried and then adjusted to the required moisture content by spraying with water, treated with the acid gaseous mixture, which may contain 0.05-5% by volume of the gaseous acid, at 4 DEG -90 DEG C for 3-60 seconds, stored on rollers or supports wrapped in plastic sheeting outside the acid gas-filled treating chamber for 20 minutes to 18 hours, rinsed cold and washed with alkaline washing liquors, e.g. having a pH value of 9-14, at 60-100 DEG C. Pleats or embossed effects imparted to fabrics before the acid treatment are fixed by the process.
