Abstract
Alkali metal a -pyrrolidones are prepared by passing a -pyrrolidone in the form of a film through a reaction zone maintained at temperature and pressure conditions above the dew point of water, wherein it is contacted with an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or mixture thereof at 170-250 DEG C., whereby the alkali metal a -pyrrolidone remains in the film and the water formed is vaporized. The vaporization may be aided by the passage of a stream of an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen. The alkali metal base may be introduced in solution in a vaporizable solvent, e.g. an alcohol, ether, ketone, hydrocarbon or water. Films which may be used are those formed by turbafilm or wipe film evaporators, those formed by trickling pyrrolidone through packed columns, and films formed in falling film towers. The thickness of the film may be up to 0.5 inch. The alkali metal pyrrolidones may be employed as catalysts in the polymerization of pyrrolidone.
