Abstract

101,872. Peterson, L. A. Oct. 9, 1916. Variable-speed toothed gearing.-In gearing for motor-vehicles, trollies, &c., of the kind in which a countershaft d driven continuously from a driving-shaft a drives a number of loose gear-wheels on a driven shaft n in line with the driving-shaft, a sliding sleeve clutch m connecting any one of the loose wheels to the shaft, the loose wheels i, k, l are mounted to rotate on flanges projecting from the sides of the adjacent wheels, and are kept in position by collars 2, or by a separate bearing 3 surrounding the end wheel of a series. Ball bearings may be provided as shown with the wheel i. The sleeve m has clutch teeth t, u adapted to engage any one of the loose wheels, inoperative spaces being provided between the different engaging positions. For the reverse drive, an intermediate pinion 4 is placed between the gear-wheels h, p. The teeth t engage teeth 12 on the driving-shaft for the direct drive. In a modification, the bearing 3 is replaced by a roller mounted on a stud in the casing to rotate against the side of the wheel k. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which a pair of gear-wheels c, j move axially on the countershaft and are operated simultaneously with the clutch m, springs s bearing against a washer 45 tending to move them in one direction. The wheels c, j are both driven from the shaft a and are clutched alternatively to the countershaft by teeth 41, 42. For the direct drive, the clutch m disengages from the wheel 15 and connects the driven shaft n to teeth 13 on the driving-shaft. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 19492/12 and 5293/14
