Abstract

Crystalline, high molecular weight propylene/butene-1 copolymers are made by polymerizing a mixture of the monomers with, as catalyst, a mixture of a halide of a transition metal, an organometallic derivative of aluminium or a halide of such a derivative, and an ester, amide or ester-amide of phosphoric acid. In the examples the monomers are polymerized in cyclohexane solution with a catalyst comprising titanium trichloride, ethyl aluminium dichloride and hexamethylphosphoramide. The product is purified by washing with methanol, cutting into fine wafers and heating these wafers under reflux with methanol or a methanol/hydrochloric acid mixture. The copolymer together with a mixture of 4,41-bis(6-tert-butyl-m -cresol)butylidene and lauryl thiodipropionate as stabilizer is dissolved in either cyclohexane or trichloroethylene and coated on to biaxially stretched polypropylene film.ALSO:Biaxially stretched polypropylene film is coated by dipping in a solution in either cyclohexane or trichloroethylene of a crystalline, high molecular weight propylene/butene-1 copolymer (see Division C3) together with, as antioxidant, a mixture of 4,41-bis(6-tert-butyl-m-cresol)butylidene and lauryl thiodipropionate. The thus applied coating has heat-sealing properties.
