Abstract
An artificial blood vessel comprises an outer tubular layer of a porous fabric resistant to resorption by body fluids and an inner tubular layer of collagen, the collagen tube being at least partially tanned and containing an anticoagulant. The collagen tube may contain, as anticoagulant, a mucopolysaccharide (e.g. chondroitin sulphate, hyaluronic acid, heparin, and heparin sulphate), as antibiotic, chlorotetracycline, neomycin and bacitracin, and glycerin. The fabric may be polytetrafluoroethylene or polyethylene glycol terephthalate. The blood vessel may be prepared by extruding a homogeneous gel comprising collagen and aqueous alkaline medium into a tube, drying or partially drying the collagen tube by passing air therethrough, covering the collagen tube with a porous fabric tube, contacting the inner wall of the collagen tube with tanning solution, washing to remove the residual tanning agent, contacting the inner wall of the collagen tube with anticoagulant solution, washing the inner wall and drying. The homogeneous gel may comprise an anticoagulant, an antibiotic and glycerin. A coating of collagen may be applied to the collagen tube before applying the fabric tube thereto. The tanning agents specified include extracts of Chinese gallnuts, oak, pine quebracho, sumach, mimosa and valonia, and Depremol, Bilton, Svitan TK, Kortan A30, degras, elain, chlorolignin, clay mixture and 2, 4, 6-trimethoxytriazine.
