Abstract

1,018,192. Measuring moisture content electrically. BECKMAN INSTRUMENTS Inc. Aug. 13, 1962 [Oct. 30, 1961], No. 30901/62. Heading G1N. The active portion of an electrode in an electrolytic hygrometer contains rhodium. In Fig. 1, helically-wound rhodium-containing wires 12, 14 are supported by insulating jacket 16, forming a long tube 10, and the exposed portions of the wires are coated with a hygroscopic substance, e.g. P 2 O 5 . The major portion of tube 10 is helically coiled and inserted in a stainless steel casing, then potted. The electrodes may consist of pure rhodium, an alloy of rhodium with platinum, iridium, or osmium, or alternatively only one electrode (the anode) may be of rhodium, the other being of platinum. In a modified construction the electrodes project slightly from the inner surface of the tube. This is achieved by wrapping a pair of rhodium electrodes separated by a pair of copper spacer windings round a mandrel and coating them with an insulating jacket. The copper wires are etched away after removal of the mandrel, and the inner surface is coated with P 2 O 5 as before. A similar device may be constructed with platinum electrodes which are then modified by passing a rhodium plating solution through the device while applying a direct voltage to the electrodes, one of which becomes coated with rhodium. Suitable insulating materials for jacket 16 are glass, polychlorotrifluoroethylene and polytetrafluoroethylene.
