Abstract
Thermoplastic copolyesters are made by reacting (a) 100 mol per cent of bisphenol A with (b) 10-70 mol. per cent of a diaryl terephthalate; (c) 25-89 mol. per cent of a diaryl isophthalate; and (d) 1-5 mol. per cent of a diaryl carbonate (the sum of (b), (c) and (d) being substantially 100 mol. per cent) in the presence of a further 0.003-0.02 mol. of a diaryl carbonate per mol. of total aryl esters. Reaction is effected by heating to 180 DEG -310 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst (e.g. an oxide, hydroxide, hydride or phenolate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal; at ZnO, PbO or Sb2O3). Uses.-Films, moulding compositions and coatings.
