Abstract

1, 018, 041. Photo-electric sorting apparatus. F N-C CORPORATION. May 13, 1964 [June 19, 1963], No. 19822/64. Heading G1A. Apparatus for sorting dusty articles includes means for passing a stream of gas across an optical inspection station to prevent the deposition of dust on the optical system. Rice grains to be sorted according to reflectivity fall from a hopper 14 through annular appertures 18 and 22 to an inspection zone where they are illuminated by light from a lamp 64 reflected horizontally by a mirror 62. Light reflected from the grains is reflected by a mirror 60 to a photo-sensitive detector. The output of the detector controls actuation of air jets 30 to deflect the grains into one or other of bins 26 or 28. A motor 112 rotates the shaft 48 so that the mirrors 60, 62 scan the whole of the annular inspection zone and brushes 130, 132 sweep the collected rice grains into shoots 40 and 38. The deposition of dust on the optical system is prevented by a cylindrical transparent shield 80, both sides of which are kept clean by streams of air P and Q formed between a blower 70 and an extractor 110. The air also serves to cool the lamp 64.
