A uranium based alloy comprises: Al, more than 1200 p.p.m. but not more than 1500 p.p.m.; Fe, 200-650 p.p.m.; the balance, apart from incidental impurities, being uranium. The alloy is preferably quenched from the b phase region and annealed in the a phase region.
