[Also in Division F2] A screw-on throwaway oil filter comprises a cylindrical metal casing 1, a filter cartridge therein, a thin metal closure member 4 having a central opening with a plurality of oil inlet ports 15 therearound, and a threaded bushing 10 secured to the inner edge of the member 4 for screwing the filter on to an engine block 19. The member 4 forms a pressure-compensating diaphragm spring and comprises radial corrugations, one of which, 7, forms a seal, through a gasket 13, with. the engine block. Member 4 is stamped from sheet metal to form an inherently smooth annular surface between tension annulus 7 and compression band 8, and an anti-drainback valve 20 comprising a disc of soft rubber or other elastically deformable non-metallic material is positioned over said member, across the oil inlets 15, seated at its outer edge on the annular surface and pivotable about its inner edge. In operation, the oil pressure opens valve 20, and oil flows through the filter element 22, and returns to the engine through passage 16. When the oil viscosity is abnormally high or if the filter clogs, a by-pass valve 27 opens to permit oil to pass through the casing without filtration. Should the oil pressure within the casing become excessive due to malfunction of the oil-pressure-regulating valve of the engine, compression band 8 moves upwards slightly under the hydraulic pressure, gasket 13 is unsealed from gasket seat 18, venting oil to atmosphere, and the spring action of the conical wall 9 returns the gasket to its seat to effect resealing as soon as the pressure drops to a safe value. The filter cartridge 22 may be a pleated paper element, or a depth type element formed by packed fibrous material or other filter medium.
