Abstract
1,017,713. Irradiation by high-energy electrons. ATOMENERGIKOMMISSIONEN. Dec. 12, 1963 [Dec. 19, 1962], No. 49075/63. Heading H5R. A method of irradiating objects (e.g. canned meat &c.) with high energy electrons, includes surrounding the objects with material of substantially the same specific gravity (e.g. water &c.) and composed of constituents having substantially the same average atomic number as the object. When the can is irradiated by a beam of electrons of about 13 Mev., when surrounded only by air, the resulting dosage is insufficient at the sides and the bottom of the can. By immersing the can in water and placing a reflecting plate, e.g. of lead underneath it, satisfactory dosage is obtained throughout the can. If the reflector is not used, irradiation may be carried out from above and below.
