Abstract

Apparatus for measuring the temperature of a body 11 (Fig. 1) comprises a semi-conductor thermopile 12 for measuring the temperature difference between the body and a locally disposed block 10, and a heater 17 in the block 10 for maintaining this temperature difference at a constant value, whereby the temperature of the block 10, as measured by a temperature-sensitive resistor 18, is indicative of the temperature of the body 11. The block 10 is covered with lagging 13 except on the surface facing the body 11. The heater 17 may be controlled automatically from the output of thermopile 12 amplified at 16 and augmented with a first derivative of the temperature signal. The apparatus may be used to control the heat flow from the body 11 and at any predetermined value by suitably biasing the input to amplifier 16.
