637,312. Automatic temperature control systems. PRINZ, D. G., and FERRANTI, Ltd. May 31, 1947, No. 14473. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] Apparatus for equalizing the temperatures of two bodies 2 and 4 comprises two thermostats 1, 3 with identical temperature responsive characteristics, one in proximity to each of the two bodies, and connected in series opposition, the outputs of the thermocouples being applied to a magnetic or thermionic amplifier 5 operating a heating (or cooling) device 6 in accordance with the sense of any difference between the temperatures of the two bodies so as to equalize the temperature of the body 4 to that of the body 2. The body 4 may be a temperature measuring instrument recording the temperature of a remote and inaccessible furnace 2. Alternatively, the body 4 may be a furnace whose temperature is controlled by regulating that of the body 2. In a modification, temperature variable resistors may be used in a pair of bridge circuits instead of thermocouples 1 and 3. In a further modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the thermocouples, may be replaced by a pair of temperature variable resistors in a single balanced bridge completed by a pair of fixed resistors, the bridge output being fed to the amplifier 5.
