1,017,328. Hydraulic locking devices. P. L. PORTER, C. B. PORTER, L. C. PORTER, and S. P. LENNOX, [trading as P. L. PORTER & ASSOCIATES]. Oct. 1, 1964, No. 40039/64. Heading B8J. An hydraulic locking device for releasably locking two members at selected spacing (which may be used to control a tiltable aircraft chair back rest), comprises a single cylinder 10 with an ear 12 having an aperture 14 to connect to one of said members and a structure including an outer cylinder 15 and an inner cylinder 16 fixed thereto and an end fitting 18 to be connected to the second said member. The inner cylinder 16 slidingly telescopes into the single cylinder 10 with a sealing ring 22. A first hydraulic chamber 35 and a second hydraulic chamber formed by coaxial annular compartments 36 and 38, which are interconnected by a plurality of radial bores 40 in the single cylinder 10, are normally prevented from communicating by a locking valve 44. Slight clockwise movement of a control lever 70 operates through rods 74, 75, Fig. 2 (not shown), to unseat a ball 54 to put the two hydraulic chambers into communication so that the overall length of the device may be altered, when release of the control lever re-locks the device. Hydraulic fluid in a reservoir 80 under pressure from a spring 86 is placed into communication with the two hydraulic chambers, to replenish lost fluid, whenever the control lever 70 is moved sufficiently to open a check valve comprising an 0-ring 88 and a shoulder 90 on the rod 75. A heavy coil spring 95 acts as a counterbalance to resist contraction of the device. An over-riding mechanical force applied to extend the device cause ball valve 54 to open against a spring 60 through rise of pressure in the annular compartments 36, 38.
