Abstract

1,017,201. Fuel elements. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 11, 1962 [May 11, 1961], No. 17223/61. Heading G6C. A fuel element comprises a fuel rod fitting closely within a cylindrical can and having at least one groove on its surface, the ends of the or each groove being axially displaced from each other, and the corresponding portion or portions of the can being deformed during manufacture of the fuel element so as to fit closely within the grooves, whereby to prevent relative rotation between the can and the fuel rod. As shown in Fig. 1, the fuel rod 10 has two helical grooves 15, 16 of the same hand formed at its upper and lower ends, respectively, and an intermediate groove 17 of the opposite hand. These grooves engage corresponding projections on the can surface, which are formed by forcing the material of the can 11 into the grooves by hydrostatic pressure after the insertion of the rod into the can, thus preventing both relative rotation and relative axial movement between the rod and the can. Instead of helical grooves, one or more linear grooves extending partially or entirely in the axial direction may be used, or the depressions in the rod surface may consist of a number of small discrete indentations distributed both axially and circumferentially.
