Abstract

Polyurethane prepolymers are made by reacting an organic compound having at least two isocyanate reactive groups in the molecule with an organic polyiso(thio)cyanate without the application of external heat. The polyiso(thio)cyanate is added in at least two portions; the addition being interrupted when the equivalent of between 1 and 2 iso(thio)cyanate groups has been added for each isocyanate reactive group of the organic compound, one or more further quantities of polyiso(thio)cyanate being added after the viscosity of the mixture has exceeded a value of 10,000 C.P. at 25 DEG C. The total quantity of polyiso(thio)cyanate added being sufficient to give a free iso(thio)cyanate content not less than 8% by weight in the final reaction mixture. The organic compounds containing isocyanate-reactive groups which are specified are polyether polyols, polyesters, polyesteramides and glycerides of hydroxy acids. Polyurethane foams are made by mixing the prepolymer with a compound or compounds capable of inducing foaming and cross-linking and allowing the material to foam and set. Specified are water and catalysts such as tertiary amines and in the examples dimethylsiloxane polyoxyalkylene block copolymers are also added.
