Abstract
1,017,006. Making punches and dies. MALEW ENGINEERING Ltd. Oct. 23, 1964 [Nov. 1, 1963], No. 43132/63. Headings B3A and B3W. A method of making a die assembly of the type comprising a female die and a mating male die each of which comprises a central wooden core and a wooden surround which grip between them one or more steel strip cutting inserts, and in which the male die's core is thicker than its surround to protrude therefrom and the female die's core is thinner than its surround to provide a cavity into which the male die's core can enter, comprises the steps of providing a bolster plate for each die, assembling upon the respective bolsters wooden slabs or sections from which the respective cores and surrounds are to be made, assembling the bolsters together with the slabs or sections abutting, and drilling and reaming through the bolsters and slabs or sections therebetween in that area of each slab or section which will correspond to the core of the respective die to provide, in the finished dies, at least two locating apertures through each core or core section, corresponding apertures in the two cores registering with one another. Two bolster plates 10 and 11 are first provided with guide pillars 12 and bushes 13 and then a flat slab of high density wood is secured to each bolster by screws, not shown. The slabs may be composed of sections such as a, b, c, d abutted tightly against one another. The bolster plates are now assembled together as shown in Fig. 1 and holes 16 are drilled and reamed right through the assembly, to receive metal dowels 17. The positions of the holes are selected so that there are at least two dowels in each section. The slab 15 is then removed from the bolster, slotted to receive the steel strip insert and the thickness of the surround reduced to half its original thickness. Similarly the slab 14 is slotted to receive the steel strip inserts and the core is reduced to half its original thickness. The provision of the locating holes 16 facilitates the checking of the male and female die sections which can be assembled relative to one another simply by inserting dowels into the registering holes.
