Abstract
Goods comprising wool or other animal hair which have previously been subjected to a treatment with an aqueous solution of a peroxygen compound, as herein after defined, followed by a treatment with a water-soluble, sulphur-containing reducing agent, are dyed or printed with an aqueous liquor or paste containing a water-soluble reactive dyestuff and an acid acceptor which liquor or paste is maintained at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C. during the dyeing pricess. The peroxygen compound is hydrogen peroxide, oxides and peroxides yielding hydrogen peroxide in acid solution, per acids and salts of per acids or salts containing a metal of Group VII (A) and oxygen is the anion the metal being in its highest oxidation state. The sulphur-containing reducing agent may be thioglycollic acid, a thio-propionic acid, an alkali metal sulphite, bisulphite or hydrosulphite, an amine derivative thereof, e.g. monoethanolamine sulphite or a water-soluble salt of a thio-carboxylic acid. The preferred reducing treatment is effected with sodium sulphite or bisulphite at 20-65 DEG C. The specified peroxygen compounds treatments are: aqueous permonosulphuric acid; hydrogen peroxide, perborates and percarbonates in the presence of a compound of Cu, Ag, Ni or Hg; aqueous performic or peracetic acid; p hydrogen peroxide under neutral or mildly alkaline conditions and aqueous potassium permanganate in the presence of KU or NaU. The dyestuffs should contain at least one water-solubilising group as well as a reactive group (many listed) and may belong to the nitro, azo, anthraquinone or phthalocyamine dyestuff series. The acid acceptor may be soda ash, sodium and potassium carbonates, bicarbonates or silicates or trisodium and tripotassium phosphates addition the dyebath may contain electrolytes, levelling or wetting agents, e.g. an alkyl phenol-ethylene oxide condensate, and organic solvents e.g.n-butyl and benzyl alcohols, and the printing pastes may also contain a thickener. The dyes may be applied by conventional immersing, padding or printing techniques and fixation is achieved below 60 DEG C. preferably at 20-30 C. in a short time. Examples of dyeing textile materials of wool, Cashmere and Botany are given.
