Abstract

A copolymer of 2-30% shellac treated with a base and 70-98% of styrene, alpha-(methyl or chloro) styrene or a halo, nitro, methyl or ethyl nuclear substituted derivative thereof and/or butadiene - 1,3 - isoprene, chloroprene, pentadiene-1,3 or piperylene may be produced by copolymerizing the monomers in an aqueous alkaline solution of shellac as the sole emulsifier at a pH of 6.5-8.3 and in the presence of a free radical initiator. The shellac may be bleached and dewaxed and treated with ammonia or borax as the base. The copolymer may be a terpolymer of 2-30 parts of the above shellac, 10-90 parts of styrene of the above derivatives and 90-10 parts of the above diolefins and the foregoing monomers may also be polymerized with isopropenyl ketone, divinyl benzene, acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride or an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate. The polymers may be dispersed in water. The free radical initiator may be potassium persulphate.
