Abstract
A synthetic lubricant comprises an ester base stock and an antioxidant composition containing an arylamine compound and an acidic phosphorus compound. The antioxidant preferably comprises about 0.1-5% of the base stock and the phosphorus compound preferably comprises less than 4.7% of the antioxidant composition. The ester base stock may comprise diesters of dibasic acids and alcohols, diesters of monobasic acids and glycols, tri-esters of monobasic acids and trihydric alcohols, pentaerythritol tetraesters, e.g. as obtained from a dibasic acid and glycol, chain terminated with an alcohol or monobasic acid. Typical of the esters specified are 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1:3-propanediol dipelargonate and bis-(2:2:4-trimethylpentyl) azelate; also mentioned are esters of alcohols and oleic acid dimers and trimers, the polyester of azelaic acid, neopentyl glycol and 2:2:4-trimethylpentanol and the polyester of azelaic acid, 2-butyl-2-ethyl-1:3-propanediol and octanoic acid. The arylamine component may comprise phenothiazine, N-substituted and ring-substituted phenothiazine, dinaphthylamines and, preferably in combination with these compounds, p:p1-dialkyldiphenylamines and N-phenyl-naphthylamines. A number of specific compounds are mentioned. The phosphorus component may be phosphoric or phosphorous acid and organic partial esters thereof, e.g. mono- and di-alkyl, mono- and di-aryl, mono-and di-alkylaryl phosphates and phosphites. In addition to simper compounds of these types, 2:2-dimethyl-1:3-propanediol cyclic hydrogen phosphate and phosphite are mentioned.ALSO:An antioxidant composition comprises an arylamine component and an acidic phosphorus component. The latter component preferably comprises less than 4,7% of the composition. The arylamine component may comprise phenothiazine, N-substituted and ring-substituted phenothiazine, dinaphthylamines and, preferably in combination with these compounds, p,p1-dialkyl diphenylamines and N-phenyl naphthylamines. The phosphorus component may be phosphoric or phosphorous acid and organic partial esters thereof e.g. mono- and di-alkyl, mono- and di-aryl and mono- and di-alkylaryl phosphates and phosphites. A number of examples of both the above components are specified: in addition to simpler phosphorus compounds, 2 : 2-dimethyl-1 : 3-propane diol cyclic hydrogen phosphate and phosphite are mentioned.
