Abstract
The formation of slime in aqueous media used in the manufacture of pulp and paper products is prevented by adding to the aqueous medium a quantity of alkali metal azide corresponding to an azide ion concentration in said aqueous medium of from 1 to 500 p.p.m. The azide is preferably added as an aqueous solution containing borax, an alkali metal carbonate or hydroxide, an alkylamine, alkanolamine or heterocyclic base to maintain the pH above 8. The aqueous solution may also contain an antimicrobial sulphur compound, e.g. NC-N = C(SH)2, N - alkyldithiocarbamic acids or mercaptobenzothiazoles or alkali metal salts thereof; antimicrobial chlorophenols, e.g. penta-, tetra- or tri-chlorophenols; or polyhydric alcohols, e.g. glycerol or alkylene glycols.
