Abstract

1,016,388. Variable speed epicyclic gear. LAYCOCK ENGINEERING Ltd. Nov. 4, 1964 [Nov. 4, 1963], No. 43383/63. Heading F2D. In a motor vehicle three-element epicyclic overdrive, or underdrive, gear unit in which a clutchbrake member 7 is spring-loaded to clutch a freely mounted sun 4 to an output ring-gear 6 for direct lock-up drive, and oppositely moved by a pair of hydraulic pistons (not shown which act on bridge-pieces 22 to brake the sun 4 to a fixed casing 14 for drive at the planetary ratio (Fig. 2, not shown), the spring loading of the clutch-brake member 7 is formed by two sets of high and low rate springs 18, 19 arranged on axially - movable sleeves 23 so that initially both spring sets combine to provide a large brake disengaging force, the axial movement of the sleeves 23 being limited such that only the light, low rate, set of springs 19 are further effective to provide a small clutch engaging force, whereby undesirable rapid or snatching clutch engagement due to the normal heavy brakedisengaging spring thrust is avoided. The springs are each in sets of four, the heavy high rate springs 18 being each pre-loaded against flanges of the sleeves 23 axially located, one way, on lugs 25 of the casing 15 by circlips 26, the light, low-rate springs 19 acting alone to lightly bias the clutch-brake member 7 into clutch engagement. A free-wheel clutch (not shown) is arranged between the input and output shafts and the gears have helical teeth such that in direct drive the interaction increases the grip of the clutch-brake member 7 on the ring-gear 6 to augment the axial clutch engaging spring load during reverse and forward over-running.
